Barkinside Animal Sanctuary is always interested in hearing from everyone who wants to get involved
No one is the wrong type of person to volunteer at Barkinside Animal Sanctuary.
Our main requirement is that your attitude towards the dogs and humans (in general) is a compassionate one.
We ask that everyone remember this is a sanctuary, a place of peace.
Many of our rescues remain traumatised and remain affected by the brutality
inflicted on them in their lives before Barkinside Animal Sanctuary forever.
----------------------------------
As individuals we maintain our own personal calm and reassuring presence, more so when in their space
This creates an overall atmosphere which the animals can learn to trust and call their home, forever.
The combined years of experience of animal rescue in action at Barkinside ensures
that we maintain the effectiveness we are known for, in all the areas we work in.
What we have created is a powerful and life saving tool.
It requires the mutual respect and trust of many people to make it work.
----------------------------------
Life in an animal rescue centre isn't always about fluffy puppies.
Finding out about the world most of our rescues come from
can be a shocking and brutal revelation to a new volunteer.
This is why we all keep an eye on each other and check in regularly.
Camaraderie, honesty and friendship are a huge part of volunteering at Barkinside.
Knowing that you can tell any of your co-volunteers if you're struggling
or need a hug or need a breath of air - always tell someone.
If we don't take care of ourselves we become useless for animal rescue.
Part of volunteering here is being happy to look after your peers & a
willingness to show emotional & other types of support you might not be used to taking part in,
especially in a working setting.
We expect to be able to lean on each other, often without warning.
If we start to wobble or find ourselves in trouble, for whatever reason,
we can know we can rely on each other and we are safe to be emotionally vulnerable with each other.
Even though everyone at Barkinside loves the work they do,
It is often very tiring and can be extremely draining. It is normal to feel stretched in surprising ways.
We are often tired, but we made sure to look out for one another.
The animals come first.
